The old dog panting
even though it’s cool outside
Just a few breaths left
Our sweet, funny mutt turned 16 this winter, which is 112 to you and me.
She can’t see or hear all that well, and she pants at the slightest provocation,
but she loves a crunchy bone and a good ear rub.
Same as she ever did.
Can’t say quite how much we’ll miss her when she’s gone.
That last line, Liz, oh my. I hate that we do not have these lovely creatures in our lives forever. Sigh.

My sister had a dog who was that old, from her glory days of running around the country. She brought him back with her from Alaska, and when he was 17 he died. It was hard — and yet, unlike with humans, no words are needed. Your dog KNOWS how much she is loved, and will, to that last breath.
Liz,
My cat Abby will be fifteen this year. She hobbles a little when she walks now and is very careful when she jumps down from the sofa or our bed. She is a good companion. She oftens sits on the chair beside me when I work at my computer. She snuggles next to me when I read the newspaper in the morning. She enjoys a good ear rub too–and she loves to be scratched under her chin. Old as she is–she still purrs louder than any cat I’ve ever heard. I can’t say how much I will miss her when she is gone.
