Visits & Events

As a teaching author, Liz Garton Scanlon enjoys visiting schools and summer camps, facilitating workshops for both kids and adults, speaking on panels, and offering conference critiques. She is represented by Carmen Oliver at The Booking Biz, who is eager to work with your school or organization to create the visit that best fits your needs!

Please note that Liz supports equity and inclusivity in the world of books and beyond. She is not available for any events that discriminate or marginalize in any way, either on the page or off, and will always advocate for inclusive, representative events and gatherings. For context, please read the WNDB definition of diversity.

School Visits

Liz loves speaking with the kids she writes for. Material on the writing life and bookmaking process can be shared via intimate classroom exchanges, at all-school assemblies, or something in between. Either way, all visits are standards-aligned, grade-leveled, creative and interactive, and highly respectful of both kids and books.

A full day’s visit includes up to four programs of 45 to 60 minutes each. Sponsor’s expenses include honorarium, transportation, lodging and meals. Neighboring schools can arrange to share a day and split the cost. Liz is always happy and grateful to sign and personalize books before or after presentations.

Libraries, Conferences, and Keynotes

Liz has spoken on topics as varied as writing in rhyme, using metaphor, deep revision, cultivating hope through creativity, and more. She welcomes your invitation and will gladly collaborate with you to find the right focus or topic for your conference workshop, panel or keynote, literacy night, in-service, one book or charity event, etc.

Virtual Visits

If your students have already read one or more of Liz’s books, considering requesting a free 15-minute Q&A over Zoom or Google Meet. (Limited slots available) If you’d like to host a full reading and presentation, that can be arranged for a fee.

Please contact Carmen Oliver at The Booking Biz to discuss any of the above.

“I can’t praise Ms. Scanlon enough for the transformation she created in my 5th grade poets. Her natural teaching ability and engaging workshops inspired my students to create amazing poems. Students who were reluctant writers gained confidence and pride. And, as a teacher, I gained confidence in my ability to teach poetry more effectively.” – Judi Thompson, Zilker Elementary, AISD

“Liz brings all of the thoughtfulness, ingenuity, and generosity of her beautiful books into her presentations and her teaching.
