Daring

Our girls got The Daring Book for Girls for Christmas, and we’ve had some interesting discussions about double-dutch jump-roping and Bloody Mary (Queen of Scots).

But my favorite moment so far has been this:

Yesterday I stumbled upon a frenzied craft session, in which they were making badges to recognize various accomplishments — everything from scooter tricks to a duet on the piano and violin.

“We got this idea from the Daring Book, Mama,” said one.

“They said we could download badges,” said her sister.

“But why download them when you can make ones that are way cooler and more about you?” said the first.

Pass the construction paper.
Who needs the book?

Badges? We don’t need no stinking downloadable badges!

I love your girls’ attitude. And I wish the Daring Book for Girls actually had more daring stuff in it. Kiki Strike kind of stuff, not Betty Homemaker stuff. But that’s just the rebel in me.

I know, right? Kiki Strike and Thelma and Louise. Although my youngest, in particular, needs no encouragement in that regard. I think of it more like a handy little World Book Encyclopedia rather than a book of guts and risk…

    Attagirls!

That book has piqued my interest. Would you recommend it as a purchase? Inquiring minds wanna know.

Um, y’know, it’s got a bunch of interesting stuff in it and one could become a bit of a Rennassaince gal through the content, which seems thorough and balanced. But, it’s not actually very DARING stuff. They marketed the snot out of it — it feels sort of private and titallating for some reason, and the girls love that. How’s that for a lukewarm review?

Wondering what you think about this book

I just signed my daughter up for Girls On The Run through her school. It’s basically a running group, for girls, and teaches I guess, among other things, self confidence. This book is for sale on their website and I almost bought it but I wasn’t sure. It seemed a little….anti-male to me…..not that there’s anything wrong with that….LOL!

Re: Wondering what you think about this book

Actually, The Dangerous Book for Boys came out first and people were all mad about that. Now there’s one for each sex (I don’t have a clue why one is Dangerous and one is Daring) and it’s really got a lot of great stuff but isn’t necessarily wildly daring. Still, my girls seem to be getting a kick out of it and there IS something for everyone in it, to be sure…

Thanks, Liz. Your review actually makes a lot of sense. I kind of expected that. I did have high hopes for the authors — aren’t they big writers in the area of early motherhood empowerment kind of stuff? I believe they are. Of all those books like that being marketed so heavily now, that one looked the most promising.

    Thanks!
