Haiku 19

4/19/2011

egg moon calling fish
to swim upstream, and me too —
what is there that’s new?

It is spawning season and the moon’s full and it’s time for Seder and Easter and all that.

There are so many new years, aren’t there?
Fall, when school starts.
January, according to the calendar.
And now.
Crocuses. Bird eggs. A poem or two…

And here’s a little Lucky Strike extra for you — some haiku humor.

Because I’m thematic that way.

(Thanks to my brother-in-law for being my man-in-the-field on this one…)

Cool how you’ve brought all these new signs together. Love the fish swimming upstream to spawn image!

I’ve seen that bumper sticker before too. Funny how refrigerator is just the right amount of syllables for the classic def. Even funnier how it points to the difficulty of translating the Japanese form literally without context in so many unapproachable English versions of haiku. But then I tend to get all pedantic about the form, instead of just getting a good laugh! Ha Ha on me.

Love your haiku, Liz. That sense that we’re all looking for newness–new life, fresh starts, do-overs! Egg moon–so great.

I’ve seen the refrigerator haiku as a t-shirt but also, appropriately enough, as a refrigerator magnet:>) Love that your bil took a pic for you!

I’m having fun reading your poems as I catch up on all I missed. The bumper sticker certainly made me laugh. Thanks for sharing!
