My writing class for the 12-week short semester starts tomorrow night.
Which, in case you live under a rock or never enter a Target store, is Valentine’s Day.
I’m going to be so popular, dontcha think?
Students love missing dreamy interpersonal holidays to sit in drafty old college classrooms for three-and-a-half hours. (That’s right — did I mention that part? Three-and-a-half hours. Again with the popularity…).
And y’know, since it’s the first night, let’s spend a goodly portion of the evening talking about administrative nuts and bolts — syllabi and attendance policies, stuff like that.
Oh, they are going to be rolling in the aisles.
Do you think I should bring cookies or conversation hearts?
LOL! In a former life, I too was a professor…I remember the syllabus reconaissance well. Blergh.
Conversation Hearts? No way. No talking in class, remember?
(Seriously, I’ll bet you and your students have a wonderful time.)
I opted for dark chocolate 🙂
And honestly, if my students don’t talk in class, I’m SUNK!
I think you better bring both.
tee hee…
last year, on valentine’s, i had my students write ‘vinegar valentines.’ it were a hit, yo.
DO TELL!!!

Penny dreadfuls!! LOVE that.
And I’m sooo tempted by the psalms. Will give it a whirl…
Just don’t bring any treats that can be turned into weapons–against you!
Have fun, as much as possible.
I’m a pretty quick duck if it comes to that…
Miss Rumphius Says
Ack! As a tried and true morning person, evening classes during grad school just about killed me. I’d recommend coffee, lots of coffee, or some other good source of caffeine. Requiring them to act out a few poems on the first night might keep them in good spirits as well. Balcony scene, anyone?
Good luck!
Re: Miss Rumphius Says
Yes. Coffee. Balcony Scene. And maybe some calisthenics???
