Metaphors and more

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I told you about a school visit I’d done, using ‘forced’ metaphors to bring out the freshness in a poem?

Well, I got a big ol’ envelope of thank you notes from the kids I worked with that day. (What is it about the marriage of magic markers and construction paper that plucks the heartstrings so?)

Here are a few of my favorites.
Keep in mind that some of the i’s are dotted with hearts.

Dear Ms. Scanlon,
Thank you for the lesson poetry. I was surprised how it turned out. I thought we where going to write stories but we ended up doing what I love to do the most, write poetry. Thank you so much. Sincerely, Nicky

I know. I love that he shared his challenges with me. He’s obviously of the ‘write what you know’ school. But he also had fun. Sweet little guy…

Awwwww… That is sooooo cute! I substitute teach and have received many nice notes and pictures for my fridge over the years.

There IS something magical about magic markers and construction paper!

My six year-old tends to color EVERY inch of anything she can get her hands on, so you could even say my house is very magical some days…

I know. It would be very hard to imitate effectively. It is so unique and full of perspective. Unlike when I misspell, in which case it’s just embarrassing.

Those notes are the best. What nice “payment” for a morning’s work.

I just love receiving these kind of packages. The kids are always so sincere, and often include some impressive artwork.

O! how great is that last one?!

I love that the gamer is now turned on to poetry, too.

I know. And that he made the connection that maybe he’d missed out on poetry because of video games?!!?! LOVE that.
