I went on the road late last week for a very inspiring book gig.
As one of three authors/illustrators (including the ever-awesome Don Tate and Kelly Bennett) at the10th Annual Corpus Christi Children’s Book Festival, I read to approximately 1,000 four- and five-year-olds.
Seriously. That is not a typo.
They move these groups of kids through with their wiggles and their matching t-shirts and an amazing amount of calm and grace. All in all, it was pretty swell, and I made it home happy and just a little hoarse (and with a speeding ticket, but we won’t go into that here.)
Needless to say, my time at the computer has been limited, but my haiku have been accumulating regardless.
And without further ado, here they are…

Pigeon, grackle, squirrel —
who brought you sunflower seeds?

Now that sounds like a fun gig!
Sometimes I think the squirrels are feeding the doves because they pick through the seeds for their favs and then drop the rest on the ground for the doves.
Oh, and speeding tickets? Let’s just say I am sure I have a fast-flying guardian angel.

WOW. I’m pretty overwhelmed by a classroom of forty-eight kids; a thousand would send me into hiding. How fun, though – what a great day for books and reading and kids.
You know, I’ve never seen a grackle in my life? I have to look that up.
As for the speeding ticket: *grump*
I was wondering where you’d got to. Glad you’ve had such a fun time (hoarseness and ticket be damned) and that you’re home again and sharing your little gems.
And here I thought our audiences of 100 were impressive. Go, you!
Also, one and only time I got a speeding ticket was when I got TWO speeding tickets in ONE WEEKEND. So at least you didn’t do that.
