My first grader is finishing up a poetry unit at school — reading and writing — and she’s shared a bit with me.
I’ve decided I have no choice but to display her fabulousness here.
I know I’m biased, but really….
Stage Fright
My stomach is like a pancake
when I step on stage
It just flips and flips and flips
and then I am afraid
I think it’s getting me right between the eyes today especially, because tonight is Coffeehouse up at our little school. Coffeehouse is a full-blown, all-hands-on-deck talent show. Last year there was everything from comedy to hula hooping to haiku, and tonight’ll be more of the same, I assure you. My small one is playing the piano and she seems really excited. In fact the other day she told me she wished she were playing two songs instead of one.
But, inside all that bravado, a pancake…
Bravo! I hope her music goes as well tonight as her poetry.
I love that she isn’t afraid till that pancake starts flipping.

That poem is absolutely perfect. 🙂
I gotta say it, I love the food imagery. That little poet is goin’ places! Here’s a good luck hug for the small one, piano virtuoso. Have fun, all of you, at the bash.
Stage Fright
Liz,
It would seem your little poet/pianist may be more eager than nervous…seeing that she wishes she could play two songs. I hope her butterflies flutter away. Have a great time!
Give her a spoonful of maple syrup to calm that pancake down!

Oh I hope your little one had a marvelous time. Her poem was spot on and you have a right to be proud, mama.

Liz,
I forgot to leave my name when I left my earlier “anonymous” comment.

I like the maple syrup idea! What a wonderful poet and brave girl she is! Hope everything was fabulous.
Thanks, everyone. Syrup not necessary. She just beamed up there on stage. And you should have seen the pogo demonstration and mother-daughter haiku!!! It was quite a night…
Sweet!
You are proud with good reason, Mama – your first grader is a genius.
I hope Coffeehouse went well.
Oh, I’m so glad she shone!! She could have recited this poem and brought down the house. I love it.
Adorable poem! Glad everything went beautifully!
In fact, I’m sharing a few K-3-written poems at a school visit this week. Would love to share hers if she wants her poem known far and wide (OK, only as far and wide as Fernbrook Elementary in Minnesota:>)
