Poetry Friday — Winter Break

Hello, Friends,

Just a note to wish you happy holidays and a bright new year.
I am taking a break from all things computer-y until then and, in the meantime, plan to enjoy lots of…

Picture Books in Winter
— Robert Louis Stevenson

Summer fading, winter comes–
Frosty mornings, tingling thumbs,
Window robins, winter rooks,
And the picture story-books.

Water now is turned to stone
Nurse and I can walk upon;
Still we find the flowing brooks
In the picture story-books.

All the pretty things put by,
Wait upon the children’s eye,
Sheep and shepherds, trees and crooks,
In the picture story-books.

We may see how all things are
Seas and cities, near and far,
And the flying fairies’ looks,
In the picture story-books.

How am I to sing your praise,
Happy chimney-corner days,
Sitting safe in nursery nooks,
Reading picture story-books?

We have icy rain falling today and I am longing for a cozy chair near the fire with a pile of picture story books and a warm child to cuddle. A little music in the background and some twinkling lights… sigh.

Thanks for sending this one in, Liz. My first memory of poetry is reading Stevenson’s “A Child’s Garden of Verses.” He’s wonderful.

Here’s my version. It works for picture books, chapter books, adult novels, newspapers, etc.:

How am I to sing your praise,
Happy curled up on the couch days,
All the cares of life forgot,
While I get lost in a plot.

I’m very slow in getting to this, but I’m glad I found it. Why haven’t I seen that before? It’s wonderful.

    Happy new year!
