I am lucky enough to live minutes away from the perfect way to start a day. All the runners and walkers and rowers and cyclists agree. We find ourselves here, before checking the news or our work emails. We know the barrage awaits. But first, this.

Water waits calmly
knowing the strokes are coming
Even morning breaks

I was a port rower, seat 6, and loved every minute on the water. It’s a wonderful way to start the day. Love the memories this poem has stirred.
You are such a jock, Tricia. You inspire me.
My graduate school has a crew, and a friend of mine’s husband trains with them, yelling from the boat into silent mornings. They’re so loud! I love it. It’s a kind of community of straining together that is just kind of beautiful.
Truly. Did you read Lessons in Chemistry? There’s very visceral rowing scenes in that book.
